A 2011 Kia Optima Hybrid traveled through the continental United States, driven by Wayne Gerdes and Chris Bernius over 7,899 miles, recording an average fuel economy of 64.55 miles per gallon. Beating the vehicle's EPA highway rating by 61%, the trip took 14 days and averaged 564 miles driven every day. Optima hybrid consumed about 5.5 tanks of gasoline, and traveled an average of 1,418 miles between fill-ups.
"While traveling across the United States the Optima Hybrid experienced temperatures ranging from more than 118 degrees Fahrenheit to less than freezing point." Kia's senior executive vice president and chief operating officer Thomas Oh said in a statement.1
