New Kia models are getting safer than ever thanks to advanced driver-assist features, like the Autonomous Emergency Braking system available for the 2017 Kia Optima. However, all these advances may come with a dark side—experts fear distracted driving is on the rise, as drivers put more and more faith in their car's technology to save them.
This has a particularly adverse effect on bicyclists.
Few autonomous braking systems recognize the shape of bicycles on the road, and may not be able to prevent a collision with a bike as they would with another car. And traffic accidents are much more devastating to a bike rider than a passenger inside a vehicle.
According to a recent report by the Governors Highway Safety Association, bicycle traffic fatalities are on the rise. To help keep cyclists safe, Cars.com has a list of tips. Here are a select few:
- Drivers should avoid distractions, like cell phone use
- Drivers should give at least three feet when passing bikes
- Cyclists should always wear a helmet
- Cyclists should use front- and rear-mounted lights when riding at night
